Re: [WarOf1812] Reenactors in SC
I am not aware of any 1812 reenactment units in South
Carolina at the present time. Our unit, the 2nd
Vriginia Regiment, 1813-1815, is based out of the
Norfolk, Virginia area. Although we portray a
Virginia Militia regiment we have recently discussed
forming a US Regular infantry impression based on the
From what we have seen in records and order books this
unit was recruited in Virginia. A detachment from the
20th, under a Captain Pollard, was sent from Fort
Norfolk to Craney Island and was present during the
battle which took place there, June 22, 1813. Other
companies were sent to the northern theatre and
participated in a number of battles there.

Before the war the United States Marine Corps opened a barracks in
Hampstead to act in unison with the Naval Station at Charleston. The
Navy comander complained about the marines being removed from the
yard and the expense they incured renting a house for a barracks.
The Marines there often supplied men and material to the Marines
under Captain John Williams who was helping out in the invasion of
Florida in the "Patriots War". Just before the War started the Sec
NAV ordered that all Marines be removed from the small gunboats so
they could be used in the Larger ships. So after the Marines withdrew
from Florida and very little action taking place in that theatre the
Marines in SC were sent all the way to Sackets Harbour NY. So
Marines recruited in SC we sent off to battle in two completely
opposite theatres of war. As for reenactors we, USS CONSTITUTION
1812 Marine Guard, have been in contact with a few guys down that way
that want to gear up as Marines. If you like I could try and get you
in contact with them.
There is a group out of North Carolina portraying 21st Foot, North British Fusiliers. If interested, I can get you a contact name and number.
