Group Description

This email list-serve is open to members of the Wappingers Creek Watershed Intermunicipal Council and interested volunteers to facilitate information sharing and cooperation. The Wappingers Creek Watershed drains 134,871 acres through 11 towns and 2 villages, and is located entirely within Dutchess County, NY, in the Hudson Valley.

The mission of the Wappinger Creek Watershed Intermunicipal Council is to cooperatively address common issues that may affect the quality of the watershed. Some of these common issues include: preventing non-point source pollution to the watershed, the remediation of existing pollution sources, education and information exchange related to watershed issues, the preservation of open space and natural resources, and the expansion of economic activities that are consistent with protecting the watershed environment.

Each municipality that includes part of the Wappinger Creek Watershed within its boundaries shall appoint two designated representatives to the WIC. The municipalities are: Towns of Clinton, Fishkill, Hyde Park, LaGrange, Milan, Pine Plains, Pleasant Valley, Poughkeepsie, Stanford, Wappinger and Washington, and the Villages of Millbrook and Wappingers Falls. In addition, the Town of East Fishkill participates with the WIC. The WIC is open to the public, and volunteers interested in becoming involved with the projects outlined below, are encouraged to participate.

Members agree to work towards the following goals:

Goal 1: Draft & Implement Water Use Management Plans;
Goal 2: Protect Streamside Buffer Zones;
Goal 3: Conduct Stream Assessments, Cleanup and Planting Projects;
Goal 4: Provide Public Education and Outreach; and
Goal 5: Meet Regularly to Share Information.

CCEDC Environment program staff moderate this listserve and provide education, research and GIS services to the WIC. Contact 845-677-8223 for more information.
