"WWF considers thatthe development of some projects in the (Indonesian) province does not paymuch attention to the environmental aspect," director of the WWF`sBioregion Sahul Jayapura, August Ramansara, told reporters hereTuesday. Citing an example, Ramansara notedthat the construction of an access road in the preservation forest of MtCycloop, being handled by the provincial public works office, has damagedthe environment. Moreover, he said, the mountainous part of Irian Jaya isthe main source of fresh water of people living around SentaniLake. Ramansara further said that Yapen Waropen`s plywood industry has abad impact on the environment, particularly on the species of birds ofparadise. He warned that if there is no effort to prevent environmentaldamage, the province would suffer from natural disasters in the future. Hesaid that the government and the people are largely responsible for protecting the environment. However, he stressed, the provincial administration should pay more attention in giving official approval to development projects and forest management.
