      1) THE LAST HERO
by Terry Pratchett - illustrated by Paul Kidby
      UK edition US edition
      Publisher: Gollancz HarperCollins
      Released 10/18/01 10/16/01
      Size 9-1/2 x 11" 9-1/2 x 11"
      Pages 160 160
      Illustrated pages 117 + covers 117 + covers
      Price: GBP 13.99 USD 35.00
Amazon Price: GBP 12.59 USD 24.50

As you can see, the two editions are virtually identical.

This is a book every Terry Pratchett fan must have
in his or her library. It is a great big beautiful volume
packed with Paul Kidby's marvelous visualizations of
most of the major Discworld figures: Capt. Carrot,
Rincewind, The Librarian, The Patrician, Death,
Leonard of Quirm, A'Tuin, Cohen The Barbarian
and His Silver Horde, Stibbons, and many others.
All this plus a chart of the 38 varieties of dragons,
a full sitting of the Gods of Dunmanifestin, an aerial
shot of Ankh Morpork and even a view of the
Discworld as seen from its moon. There are some
sidesplitting parodies of Da Vinci drawings,
Quirm's spacesuit designs, and a wild Mission Patch.

The plot is Pratchett at his best -- a mad expedition
to head off Cohen and the Silver Horde from blowing up
the Gods and destroying the Discworld. I won't
spoil it for you except to say it is as good as or better
than anything else that Terry has written so far.

Give it to yourself for Christmas.

      by Terry Pratchett

      UK edition US edition
      Publisher: Doubleday Laura Geringer Books
      Released 11/1/01 11/6/01
      Size 6x9" 6x9"
      Pages 242 242
      Jacket unknown Hilary Zarycky
      Price: GBP 13.99 USD 16.95
Amazon Price: GBP 9.09 USD 13.56

For some reason, the American jacket appears to be
much better than the British one, which looks more
      suited to a horror novel.

This is ostensibly a children's book, but of course it
isn't. It is prime Pratchett - a retelling of the story of
the Pied Piper with some "minor" changes. This, of
course, is like saying that "Wyrd Sisters" is a retelling
of Hamlet or "Guards, Guards" is a retelling of "The
Three Musketeers." What would have happened if the
townspeople ever found out that the Pied Piper was
      running a scam?

      -- Joe Schaumburger

      3) From the back jacket blurb on THE AMAZING MAURICE:

"Pratchett is fast, funny, and going places. Try him!"
      -- Piers Anthony

One good turn deserves another. For our readers
who also like Piers Anthony, here's a review of his
      latest book:

      US edition
      Publisher: Tor
      Released 10/1/01
      Size 6x9"
      Pages 300
      Jacket Darrell K. Sweet
      Price: USD 24.95
      Amazon Price: USD 17.46
      also available from
      Amazon.UK Price GBP 15.22

This is the 25th Xanth book, a continuing series
set in that magical land, which co-exists with
Florida USA. In the latest installment, the Demon
Earth has been kidnapped and unless it is
rescued, our planet's gravitational field will
disappear, destroying the planet and Xanth as
well. To find and rescue the Demon, an artifact
called the Fell Swoop is needed, and to find
that, the six magical rings of Xanth are required.
(No, no, there are no orcs - that's LOTR.) Only the
zombies know where the rings are, and so six
Xanth heroes, headed by Sim, an immortal bird,
plus a crew of zombies set out to find them.
It's a rollicking tale, highlighted by Anthony's usual
punnish humor and harrowing adventure, including
a trip to a galaxy far, far away. A good read.

Elton Murphy of The New Collector's Guild advises
us that the new Thieves' Guild Yearbook & Diary
2002 has just come out, and that there's a new
free competition, as well as a t-shirt giveaway.

The Thieves' Guild Yearbook & Diary is a
collaboration of Terry Pratchett, Stephen Briggs
and Paul Kidby, so you can be sure that it will
be full of the Discworld wit that you've come
to love and illustrated to the highest level, says Elton.

The good news is that it's out now with a
recommended cover price of GBP 10.99. The even
better news is that Amazon has it for sale with
20% OFF at just GBP 8.79 and, at the time of
writing, with only a 2-3 day dispatch time.

It really is time to say good-bye to the limited edition
Discworld Event 2,000 t-shirts, says Elton. Only 1,000
were made and Elton reports he needs the room for
all the other stock that is building up for Hogswatch.

Therefore, he will be sending a free T-shirt with every
order over GBP 35 while stocks last. The size will be
chosen at random and there's a limit of one per customer,
unless you want to buy any from his usual shop section.

What you do with them is your choice. Some might wear
them, whilst others might feel that with only 1,000 made and
many of those being submitted to the peril known as
'Washingmachineus Brutalis', there won't be that many
around in years to come and they could fetch a good price
      at auction.

To qualify for the free t-shirt, you MUST put the words
'FREE T-shirt' in the section of the checkout
that asks for your reason for buying.

Were you aware that there are now FOUR different
Discworld jigsaws currently available? They are
Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum, Mort and Equal Rites.

Elton still has a few of each left over from the Event
(not many, though) and they are available from
the Miscellaneous section of his secure online shop.

These Discworld puzzles, says Elton, are top quality
products and show off the Josh Kirby artwork to
good advantage.. Each jigsaw is GBP 11.00.

Elton promises a free Discworld Bookmark
      with any Discworld order.
