      33) LATE BREAKING NEWS... QUITE A LOT OF IT, TOO

33.1) LAST SIGNING OF 2008: PTERRY IN SOUTHPORT

On Thursday, 2nd October, Terry Pratchett will be making a special
visit to Broadhursts bookstore, on Market Street in Southport (UK),
to sign his latest books. It's the final of three signings for 2008.

Broadhursts won a national competition for the best Discworld-themed
window to celebrate 25 years of the series.

33.2) A COMPETITION: WIN A COPY OF THE TURTLE MOVES!

"If you were to write a Discworld fan guide, what would you call it
and why?" Discworld website From Rim to Hub is running a competition
-- all you have to do is write in with your answer to the question,
and the winning entry will receive a free copy of The Turtle Moves
      by Lawrence Watt-Evans:

33.3) THE AUTHOR AT WORK, IN HIS OWN WORDS

"I don't think I've ever worked so hard on a book..."

An essay by Terry Pratchett about the writing of Nation:

33.4) REVIEW OF THE FOLKLORE OF DISCWORLD

"Previous tomes examining the "reality" of Discworld have
combined new fiction by Pratchett, usually involving the Unseen
University, with a factual explanation of what's befuddling the
characters. This time round, it's all factual, although the amount
of quoting from previous Discworld volumes means that it's never
      dry..."

33.5) PRE-ECHOES OF NATION: ROUNDWORLD TREE-CLIMBING OCTOPUS HOAX

Pterry certainly is a picker-up of inconsidered trifles - I wonder
if he was aware of a certain famous internet hoax when choosing his
fauna for Nation. The "Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus" website --
detailing the history and habits of this supposed endangered species
-- was created by humorist Lyle Zapato in 1998, still exists today,
and has been used in schools as a teaching tool for internet
      literacy classes!

The site is a visual delight and features some wonderful
      "photographs" and illustrations:

33.7) FORGET THE USA ELECTIONS -- VOTE FOR PTERRY!

The online 'zine Fantasy Book Review is holding a poll for "the
greatest fantasy author of all time", and Terence D. J. Pratchett is
currently in second place behind a certain Mr Tolkien (but miles
ahead of the rest of the field). Get your votes in now!

The webpage contains a short biography of Pterry on the left-hand
side, and the poll is on the far right-hand side of the page. So
      vote, vote, vote!

      33.8) ANOTHER NATION REVIEW

...in the above-mentioned magazine. This is a very well-written,
witty and observant review by Joshua S Hill:

"In what can really only be called a tour de force by an author who
is arguably the greatest living English novelist, Terry Pratchett
has pulled out all the stops for his latest book, Nation...Pratchett
knows how to write a story that people do not want to put down, and
if you were to have seen my father over the last weekend you would
understand my point (silence would more often than not be broken by
an outrageous laugh from the family room)..."

      http://www.fantasybookreview.co.uk/Terry-Pratchett/Nation.html

      33.9) TORY PRATCHETT?!

Terry Pratchett will be addressing the (UK) Conservative Party 2008
conference, speaking on the topic of public funding for Alzheimer's
      research:

      34) AND IT'S GOODNIGHT FROM US

And thar she blows -- an exciting issue filled with up-to-the-minute
Pterry news and some uniquely daft WOSSNAME touches. This one took a
*lot* of work, and couldn't have been done without the tireless
assistance of the Newshound Gang. Have a lovely month, and we'll see
      you in October!
