      1. Getting Into the White House:  A Conversation with Janet Murguia

      Thursday, October 9, 2008 from 12:30-1:30 pm in Capitol Room H-326.  Ms. Murguia worked in the White House from 1994 to 2000, ultimately serving as Deputy Assistant to President Bill Clinton. She is currently the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR).  If you are not a hill staffer and would like to attend this event, please RSVP to Lizet Ocampo at mlocampo@....       Diversity Services Alumni and Student Receptions, October 17, 6:00 – 9:00 PM, WCL, 4801 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W. Washington , DC .  The African-American Alumni (BLSA), Latino/a Alumni and Student Associations (LAAW/LALSA), Asian Pacific Alumni (APALSA), South Asian Alumni (SALSA), and the Lambda Society invite you to Network, Find old Friends, Meet students, and Visit with faculty.  Register by October 15 at www.wcl.american.edu/alumni/reunion.  Cost: $15 per person (payable in advance) Questions?: Email alumni@....  Walk-ins are welcome, but space may be limited.  Parking available in the WCL garage (and neighboring garages) at no charge.


      3. Spanish Speakers Needed to Develop Voter's Rights Educational Material


      The Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law through its Election Protection effort is working with a number of youth vote groups to develop voters' rights cards for voter education. There will be around 16 cards produced. The groups will have the cards translated into Spanish, but Election Protection is seeking Spanish-speaking attorneys to review the translated materials to ensure that the translation is consistent with the law. If anyone is interested in assisting with this project, please email Ami Sanchez, Associate Counsel, at asanchez@....

      4. Join a LAAW Committee!

      Please consider joining one of the LAAW committees listed below.  If interested, contact the appropriate committee chair.

      Academic Support: 
      This committee coordinates the Fall Prep Course, the Spring Prep Course, and other Special Projects (e.g., mentoring, WCL student recruitment).  The Fall Prep Course subcommittee is headed by Carlos Quintana (cqboricua4@...), the Spring Prep Course subcommittee is headed by Lucero Ortiz (mlortiz@...), and the Special projects subcommittee is headed by Maryam Ahranjani (mahranjani@...). 

      This committee will maintain and update the LAAW's database and compile and distribute biweekly electronic bulletins and other periodic announcements of interest to the Association's membership.

        This committee will develop and implement the LAAW's fundraising plan.  Funds will be raised to provide book scholarship for incoming Latina/o 1Ls, bar review scholarships for Latina/o 3Ls, and the LAAW Endowment.  Chair: Shirley Rivadeneira, srivade@.... 

      WCL Relations:  This committee serves as liaison with WCL staff and students.  In particular, this committee will make strong efforts to reach out to graduating 3Ls to recruit new LAAW alumni members.  One member from this committee will also participate in activities and meetings of the fundraising committee to ensure effective coordination of activities between the two committees.
