      MY LOVE

      The way the story goes
      Orpheus was so at one
      with nature that his poems
      were recognized by
      each bird & animal
as being one of their own

      Orpheus said you don't need
to fight a war if you have words
So he poemed in the enemy camp
& the soldiers were put at ease
      while the bacchantes slithered in
as if it were a den of snakes

But the leader jumped in front
      & broke the spell
      The bacchantes fell upon him
      dismembering every cell until only
      the head remained
The leader held it up in triumph

      But the eyes blinked
the color came back into the cheeks
      The mouth opened
& with a voice that sounded
like a thousand echoes it said
      "My love!"

She dropped the head in horror
      & ran away crying out
      "He'll never stop talking!
      He'll be forever
      telling us things about ourselves!"
      She leaves our tale now

Of course when the story says
that Orpheus was torn to pieces
      it means that everyone
who reads a poem as you are now
takes a piece of the poet away
with them for their very own

      A piece of poet energy
      that goes all the way
      back to Orpheus
& comes all the way back
through the ages like a flash
      "My love!"
