      PRIZE POSSESSION

      On the beach a circle
      of gray on gray
      immature gulls & one raven
      In the center a gull
      with the white & gray
plumage of a four year bird
      standing on something
      they all want

      The raven makes a move
      but is fiercely driven back
      then from behind
      it seems like the time
      An opportunity is seized
      but not fully grasped
      & the prize is dropped
      during take off

What makes this thing of such interest
      & why are no other
      mature birds involved?
      To me it looks
like a picked clean fish skeleton
with the head still loosely attached
Sheila says it looks to her more
like a worn out ground squirrel hide

      Walking back below the rocks
the place is a flurry of empty bird tracks
where we inspect the discarded object
that just aroused such desire & find
its head is a couple of hard fragments
ripped off the rocks in the latest storm
& its body is a length of green sea weed
the kind some children call mermaid's hair
