      WHY YOU CAN'T SLEEP

      The moon is angry
because you are afraid of the dark

because you have forgotten to praise the stately dimensions of
      the dark

neglected the shrines and let the stones of the alters fall down

because you don't remember the words for darkness

because your mother and father failed to practice the movement
and to teach you the steps and the notes

because your mother and father failed to keep the air over the
      alters pure

because you have constructed dry places
where the temples of trees stood
and permitted cement in the clearings
where fairy rings spread their expanding circle of spore

and because you fill darkness with revolving searchlights
because you fill darkness with the jangle of money
because you fill darkness with the blat of machinery
because you fill darkness with the tiny babble of your nervousness

because you no longer run at dawn
because you don't know how to sit still at dusk
because you shrink from each other's darkness
that sheath over the fiery central core

because you have not once visited the cathedrals of the dark
      and worshipped there in silence

and because you no longer have the dignity to atone for these
      things

the moon stops the fountain of your sleep
and drives you out to wander and pace
wide awake and burning, mouth dry eyes burning

so that you are forced to acknowledge your own body
and to remember the body is holy
and to remember this body is one body

and this earth the one holy body you cannot desecrate with
      impunity

so that you understand that if you deny the dark
you make a mockery of light
