      The Darkest Flame

Where the fire leaps--so do I rise.

Where the sea tumbles--so Am I tumbled.

      Where the lark sings

I Am a full blue flame of speech

      sung in an empty tongue

      for a sea green silence.

I Am the darkness of flowers

      the palpitation of shadows.

      Vividly subdued to be seen

      too heavily embroidered

      to be visible.

      Where the wind licks -

      where the babe sucks -

      where the shoreline breaks -

      there Am I

      neither gone nor present

      ever existent.

The darkest light of the sun

      ablaze in an endless

      un-begun.

      ~~~~~~~~~~~
