      The Broken Jar

      How like souls
      these earthen jars
      lying broken in potter's field;
      fired clay
      with gaping holes,
      they lay bleeding
      the falling rain,
      empty.

      How like fate
      the potter's wheel;
      whirling circles
      like history in echo,
      the jar is formed beneath patient hands.

      How like you and I
      the potter;
      to throw to the grass
      his abandoned work, his crack-ridden mistakes,
      as we toss to the streets
      our abandoned souls, our crack-ridden infants,
      and then bloody ourselves on the shards,
      the whetted edges,
      of their shattered lives.

      How like humanity
      the art of pottery;
      It is much easier to create anew
      than to gather the pieces
      and repair the broken....
