      The Tolowa had a tradition

      Never set up camp

in the low area by the ocean

      at what is now

      the south edge of town

or a big wave might come

      & wash your camp away

      Most people who heard this

thought it was a quaint superstition

      or tall tale at best

      Then in March of 1964

came the night of the tsunamis

The sea rushed in washing ocean front

buildings all the way to third street

      Now you’d think some people

might want to ask if there are

      any other Tolowa superstitions

      I mean traditions

the rest of us should know about

but thus far it seems no one has
