      The Nazis seized and destroyed many vital records in Eastern Europe. Some were hidden by the churches and so were saved, but many more were lost. My greatgrandfather came over in 1855, and I can't find records of their family anywhere outside of the US.

      That’s exactly what they told me.  Same goes for the German Lutheran church records prior to 1840.
