Group Description

Welcome to the Virginian Railway (VGN) Enthusiasts Group.

Built by financier Henry Huttleston Rogers to the highest standards and completed in 1909, the VGN operated big & innovative steam, diesel & electric motive power. Because of these high construction standards and huge locomotives the VGN could move coal with less cost than most competitors and was one of the most profitable of American railroads. Now part of Norfolk Southern, the VGN continues to interest railfans, historians, authors, photographers, and modelers worldwide, as well as railroaders and community groups along its path from the mountains of southern West Virginia to port at Sewell's Point on Hampton Roads near Norfolk.

We are one of Yahoo's largest and more vibrant Railway Enthusiasts Groups. Whatever your age and interest, you'll find this an enjoyable and wholesome place to share with others and learn more. We want to stay on-topic, and family-rated. Messages of new members require pre-approval.

Many members check the MESSAGES daily. We have hundreds of FILES, PHOTOS and LINKS to other VGN-related websites.

Our group supports several VGN museums and preservation projects and periodic gatherings, both weekly and as announced:

* Norfolk and Western Historical Society, includes the VGN

* "Takin' Twenty with the Virginian Brethren," hosted by Skip Salmon, features former railroaders who meet weekly to recall VGN stories and discuss topics suggested by our online group members

* Mullens WV VGN Caboose 307 Museum

* Princeton WV Replica Station and Museum

* Roanoke VA Preservation of VGN Passenger Station and Future Museum

* Victoria VA Fully-restored and equipped VGN caboose 342 and Museum

* Suffolk VA restored Seaboard and VGN combination station

Join us and share pictures, maps, stories, questions, and web links, anything relating to VGN, and have some fun with the heritage of this wonderful little railroad, an outstanding example of a successful US transportation company.
