Group Description

This is a group for people with an interest in the visual history of Pittsburg, Kansas. One of the alluring charms of history is its pace of gradual change. Radical immediate change is usually viewed as catastrophe, while gradual measured change is the fecund soil of plesant memories. And yet memories for most of us have a nostalgic quality; the chimera of the past scintillates in our recollection and seems all the more distant by the absence of once familiar surroundings now vanished in the present. Perhaps that is why the surviving visible past is reassuring when we experience it mundanely in our daily lives? A building, for example, that has stood for a century, or a park where we once played as children, the essential character of which having remained unchanged while we have changed so very much. Those are tangible aspects of the continuity of change and stand as landmarks separating memory from imagination and history from illusion in an intensly personal way.

This group will probably not have a large membership since its interest is limited to a narrow subject matter. However, for those of us who share that interest it may offer an oppertunity for a plesant experience in our shared recollections?

For those who join who are interested in a more detailed explanation of why the group came into being, please read the introductory essay in the files section.
