FORT POCAHONTAS at WILSON’S WHARF
CHARLES CITY, VIRGINIA
Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. A Virginia Historical
Fort Pocahontas was an earthen fort built and manned by hundreds of United
Troops under the command of Brigadier General Edward Augustus Wild. On May
the Fort was attacked by Confederate forces commanded by Major General
nephew of General Robert E. Lee. The action resulted in the first victory
for USCT’s. The fort
was abandoned by Federal troops in June, 1865. The Virginia Department of
Resources views Fort Pocahontas as “one of the best-preserved fort sites.”

From Richmond: From I-295 and Rt. 5, go East approximately 24 miles to Rt.
614, Sturgeon Point Road (about 2 Miles past Sherwood Forest Plantation).
Turn right onto Sturgeon Point
Road. Go about 1 mile and watch for PAH (Princess Anne Hunt) signs
leading to parking area.
From East: From 1-64, take exit 242A (Jamestown/Rt.199 East) to Rt. 5.
Take Rt. 5 West for 16 miles to Rt. 614, Sturgeon Point Road. Turn Left
onto Sturgeon Point Road. Go about 1 mile and watch for PAH (Princess Anne
Hunt) signs leading to parking area.
