Don’t forget that these meetings are starting this week.  Please try to attend the one closest to you to represent the equine community and our interest in trails and other public recreation sites (such as arenas and cross country courses in public parks).

Take a few minutes to review the 2007 plan for your area of the state at http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/recreational_planning/vop.shtml so that you can understand the typical content in the plan and what updates may need to be made in your region.  If you can’t attend in person you can submit your comments to the address given below in the press release.

Statewide public meetings to gather input for 2013 Virginia Outdoors Plan

RICHMOND — Beginning in December, planners with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will conduct meetings across the state to gather public input for the 2013 Virginia Outdoors Plan.

The Virginia Outdoors Plan is the state’s comprehensive plan for meeting outdoor recreation, land conservation and open space needs. Written by DCR planners in coordination with state, federal and local partners, the plan provides long-term guidance for all levels of government. In addition, it assists the state in prioritizing projects and allocating funds for outdoor recreation and land conservation.

Virginia’s plan is recognized as one of the top outdoors plans in the United States, in part because it is built on citizen input. The last plan was developed in 2007.

“The Virginia Outdoors Plan serves as the guide for increasing and enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities for all Virginians, as well as our many visitors and tourists,” said Danette Poole, DCR’s director of planning and recreation resources. “We look forward to gathering feedback from communities across the state so that the upcoming plan continues to reflect the needs of citizens.”

The public meetings also will enable DCR staff to share results of Virginia’s outdoor recreation survey, a first step to developing the outdoors plan.

“During the upcoming public meetings, we look forward to hearing the needs and recommendations for outdoor recreation across Virginia,” said Janit Llewellyn Allen, DCR environmental planner and coordinator for the 2013 VOP. “Citizen input, along with research and the statewide outdoor recreation survey, will enable Virginia to be on the cutting edge with regard to meeting the changing trends in outdoor recreation.”

Meetings begin Dec. 13 and continue through March 29. All meetings will be at 3 and 7 p.m. Locations and dates are below.

DCR also will accept written comments for the 2013 Virginia Outdoors Plan. Email comments to janit.llewellyn@.... Comments can be mailed to: VOP Comments, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, 203 Governor St., Suite 326, Richmond, VA 23219.

        Want more trails?

Don’t forget that the meetings for the Virginia Outdoors Plan are occurring around the state over the next few weeks.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend the one closest to you to represent the equine community and our interest in trails and other public recreation sitesI’ve heard that we were very under represented at the first meeting.

If you need help articulating why horseback riding should be a part of the VOP, take a look at this new study from the UK that describes the health benefits of riding. http://www.bhs.org.uk/Riding/Health_Benefits_of_Riding.aspx

Virginia Living has written a great article about the James River Heritage Trail conceptual plan.  Click here to read "A Mighty Trail for a Mighty River."  If you live in one of the counties that border the River it will be important for you to be aware of this proposal when you attend the meetings.  Let’s be sure that your counties know that we want riding access along the proposed trails.
