US-based Virginians Pleas For Int’l Support

Liberians from the township of Virginia in Montserrado County based in the United States of America have resolved to accelerate sustainable development projects in their township through a five years development plan in collaboration with the local leaders and people of the township.

This was disclosed at the 5th Annual Convention of the Virginia Association of Liberians in the Americas on October 30, 2007 in Hurst, Texas, USA.

During the convention held in Providence Rhode Island, from August 9th to the 12th, 2007, the citizens of Virginia based in the Americas adopted a sixteenth point resolution proposing development priorities and also appealed to the Liberian government and the international  entities to help support their planned initiatives.

According to a press release reaching Liberia some of several projects earmarked by the Virginia Association of Liberians residing in the Americas include the construction of a multipurpose building, a town hall, a public high school, the layout of the Virginia Township, and the construction of roads throughout the township as their priorities.

According to the release, the amount of US$4,000.00 is been set aside as an initial contribution for the building projects. The Virginians in their resolution recommended to the commissioner of the Virginia Township in Liberia to take measures that will amicably resolve the issues of boundary.

At the same time, the US based Virginian urged commissioner Amelia Holmes to lobby with the legislators to help sponsor a bill for the township to be created as a city.

The Virginia Association of Liberians in the Americas is ably prepared to write historical information of Virginia and Liberia with collected date from their various sources which include the Maryland historic society in the state of Maryland, and the Virginia foundation for the humanities in the state of Virginia, USA.

Among other projects the association carried out the construction of clinics, health fair in 2004, donated school supplies to schools, and orphanages.

Meanwhile, the President of the Virginia Association of Liberians residing in the Americas, Mrs. Marie Browne is appealing to Virginians in the United States and at home to actively support the development of the township of Virginia in Liberia in the interest of their people and the whole of Liberia.

Concluding, Mrs. Browne pointed out that her organization is presently seeking a beneficial partnership that would bring glory to the people of Virginia, Liberia.
