      All,

This should be my last update before leaving for about 10 days.  The decoding on this version is the same as 0.1.5.0 but a number of cleanup items are done including functional fixes to things like Outbound buffer queue, Auto ID, logging, display of text sent etc.  I also made passes through the help files and fixed many of the contradictory statements (left over from the old V4 Help file).

It seems to be working well.  I have started on the ARQ mechanism and want to get that well defined and documented before starting to modify the code.

Please report any serious errors.  Be sure to look in the help If you have questions it covers many questions.

Thanks again for the feedback and interest.

V4CHAT also turns the NB off.  Don't remember about the antenna tuner.  RMS Express also turns the NB off and I don't remember if it turns the antenna tuner ON or not.  Also, everytime the programs open up my rig gives me an audible double beep and things change.  I suspect you have used common coding between them for rig control.  Why reinvent the wheel, right?

In any case, I don't mind the double beep I would just like to not have to turn the NB back on and turn the AT off everytime I use one of those program.  Getting old and sometimes forget. :-)

FLDIGI which uses Hamlab for control does not mess with either function and opens up quietly.

Just something to think about. :-)

              Dave,

I’ll take out the Kenwood commands that turn off the Noise blanker, Noise Reducer and Beat Canceller. Those shouldn’t be needed (it will just leave the radio as is) but will probably be OK if left active  (it’s hard to predict what some of these DSP based “filters” will do to the signal but 4FSK is more tolerant than PSK or QAM modes).  In general Radio DSP functions like noise blankers and DSP notches add distortion and unpredictability to the received waveform of digital modes  that can’t be easily undone.  The tight audio filters and Goertzel tone decoders using in the H4 TNC should be all the digital “filtering” that is necessary.

The beep you hear is the result from a command from Chat to read the radio dial. Basically the radio gives a beep every time it receives a command (usually the default setting of the radio) but you can usually turn it off in a menu of the radio.  It is similar radio control code to RMS Express but there are some differences (e.g. RMS Express doesn’t read back the radio dial or support “click-to-tune” like Chat does).

I generally don’t like trying to “piggy back” on existing 3rd party control interfaces or software.  Some of these (e.g. Ham radio deluxe etc.  not sure about Hamlab ) introduce significant delays (due to software polling) and that can cause serious degradation and variation  on Transmit > Receive latency which is critical on ARQ modes.   Any delay or uncertainty in the T>R or R>T timing ends up requiring larger timing margins and can significantly affect ARQ net throughput and reliability.

73 and thanks for the feedback,

FLDIGI which uses Hamlab for control does not mess with either function and opens up quietly.

Just something to think about. :-)

I’ll look into that. So far I haven’t touched any rig control code that wasn’t in V4Chat….Also will look at adding some other rigs like Icom 7000.

              GM Rick,

I notice two things happen everytime I open up CHAT.  The noise blanker always gets turned OFF and the rig's antenna tuner gets turned ON!!  I really don't want either of those things to happen.  Otherwise, the rig control works well.  I am using a TS-2000.

              Hope your trip goes well.

                Hello rick

                What I have here is:

During transmit the soft should NOT do anything via usb port (polling
                frequency or something like that)

The polling (here on my setup) gives some slight audio background noise
(that adds to the transmitted signal!!!!!)

So ... the poll should be "paused" during a transmit session ...

Only at start or end of a transmit session the port can be polled once (if
needed for setting ptt via cat for any radio that has cat ptt instead of
                hard wired ptt)

That should give clean transmit audio

Your soft polls every few seconds (iirr 3 seconds?!?)

Can that be "paused" during transmitting?!?

                ....

                  Hi Rick,

I can understand your hesitation to want to piggy back onto some other software that is actually doing the rig control. I was just thinking about this very subject with regard to the logging software in DXLabs, the DXKeeper. I know this is not on the priority list for now, but in the design stages it might be handy to have a hook for linking the logging to DXKeeper. I know MultiPSK, MMSSTV and fldigi have this and it works great. They all also have a gateway link to DXLabs Commander. While I have only used MultiPSK in ALE 400 ARQ once in this configuration, it did seem to function.

Not that I am trying to make the project more cumbersome or complex, how much headroom would it take for the ARQ algorithm to determine latency and adjust accordingly and dynamically? Then for those that need or want to use another system that actually does the rig interface, HAM4 can adjust as needed.

Again, just something to think about for both the logging and rig control. In any respect, please keep up the nice work.

                    Doug,

Thanks for your comments.   I already have a ADIF log generator in the Chat program and it generates a log in standard ADIF format which can be read and processed by many ADIF logging programs.  It is easy to tweak just what is written for each connect (Date, Time, Call signs, frequency etc.)  But I don’t want to focus on that yet until we get the actual decoding optimized and the ARQ working.   I want to stick with a standardized and controlled format like ADIF…otherwise you are constantly chasing a moving (and undisciplined ) target.

With respect for latency calculations…the problem is when you introduce a variable such as a delay induced by the keying program it is not a simple delay…say 100 ms  it is a variable more like 30 to 170 ms (due to OS time slicing and timer resolution within the software (hard to control too if it is third party!).  So now you have to build in margins for the latency to cover that as well.  There was in V4 and will also be in this version some compensation for measuring the initial “round trip” response….e.g. the delay from when the transmitting station ends the frame until he receives the ACK from the remote end.  This is fairly easy to measure but is subject to many factors that are not constant so require significant margins…e.g. If I measure the round trip say at 500 ms I would have to design the ARQ timing to probably work over a range of 400 to 600 or more to accommodate.  If there is another third party radio control program in that loop you could easily add another 100 – 200 ms guard band…. Making it say 200 to 800 ms.  That may not sound like much but it adds up…and in ARQ you are easily talking about maybe 30- 40% throughput impact.  So yes compensation can (and is used in some spots) but allowing very sloppy timing ends up in a protocol that is sluggish and always runs at a much slower rate than what is possible ….You would be amazed at all the work that goes into squeezing out a few percent throughput…it all adds up.   Compare this for example to Pactor that has a maximum response delay of something like 50 ms.  (its all hardware controlled).

The first part of a good ARQ protocol is to insure robustness and bullet proof IRS <> ISS exchange…not at all trivial …I have written 3 or 4 protocols.    The time to get this right is AFTER all the major bugs and tuning tweaks are done in the FEC protocol.

Thanks for your comments and interest.

                      Siegfried,

Well you have to remember that now there are several (I think 5 or 6 at my last count) of Radios that use the same USB port for both Sound card (internal USB sound card) and radio control…You have to continually read the sound card data from the USB port it is the best way to get the audio for DSP.   These radios (I have specific experience and tested at least 3 models) have excellent USB sound cards (sampling rate error typically < 200 ppm, few artifacts, good RF isolation.)  Since the USB sound card can be added to the radio during design for a few $ per radio these will become more prolific now primarily all the new HF radios from Kenwood and Icom).

During transmit the only command to the radio is PTT on and PTT off (for those installations using CAT PTT control). I’ll check and make sure that is what is happening if it is not it is easy to fix.  During receive it is necessary to continuously poll to pick up dial changes made by the user.

Can that be "paused" during transmitting?!?

                      ....

Hello rick ... that would be nice if you find a solution (pause polling while transmit) ... it is just a slight background noise (a few milliwatts I guess) ...

the rig ... but with pause the polling there should be silence ... right?!?

Polling the radio for frequency will be off during transmit on the next rev.  You should not use compression on virtually any digital mode...it distorts the waveform (not too bad for voice but no good for digital).

Hello rick ... that would be nice if you find a solution (pause polling
while transmit) ... it is just a slight background noise (a few milliwatts I
guess) ... a few watts if I accidently forget to switch off compressor in
the rig ... but with pause the polling there should be silence ... right?!?

Ps maybe I should try usb isolator for cat?!?

I will try it out (when available)

Yes I know compression is not good

I do not use it for digital ... but sometimes for voice

Letting it on accidently is bad for sure
