Group Description

We are killing our own biosphere based on our patterns of destructive disunity. These patterns result from our allegiance to disjunctive religious, cultural, and national attitudes, and to an unsustainable pro-growth economic system based on short-term self-interests. Profit-motivated media have failed to enable us to feel and see our local and national activities in a global system perspective. Religious leadership, too, has largely failed to rise to the challenge of building Earth Community.

The Global Special Observances proclaimed by the General Assembly of the United Nations, by various UN and international agencies, and by global civil society, can help us reverse these failures.

Global Special Observances can supplement our ordinary secular and religious calendars. They express a vision of Earth Community and focus on SOLUTIONS to humanity's problems, including global public education and a better-funded, more participatory UN system that connects self-government at the local level to self-government at the global level.

When you join this group, you will get automatic announcements of upcoming Global Special Observances.

Go to the "Files" section for further documents dealing with these Global Special Events.

The central focus here is on the Special Events, not the issues they deal with. Discussion should center on the history and application of these Observances and on ways to get them more broadly observed. Families, blocks, neighborhoods, churches, schools, associations, unions, towns, cities, etc., are excellent places to begin to observe these Events.

Have fun while you build Earth Community! Frame these observances as positive celebrations!

Using these events, we can come to be, individually and collectively, the changes we wish to see in the world.

The events listed here also include a few religious and US national observances.

New events appear every year. Please help by alerting us to their existence. Alert us also to conferences!
