After giving this some thought, I decided to go with the Eheim. I
purchased the Professional 3 1200 XL model 2080 (see
. What made
the decision for me was the double suction lines. In a six foot long
tank, this is a definite advantage. It's also a lot quieter than the
Fluval FX 5 that was previously on the tank (although, in fairness, that
filter was 5 years old. But still, even after an impeller change, it
rattled like crazy). I opted not to get the one with the built in heater
for two reasons: 1) my tank already has two 300 watt heaters set to keep
the tank at 75 degrees and 2) the additional cost. The water flow is
great, too. 450 gph returning through a spray bar (the actual gph is
less given the height of the tank. I'm estimating around 375 gph is
returning to the tank, but that's only a guess).
My only complaint is that the suction lines do not reach the bottom of
the tank. I am going to have to purchase four extensions (two for each
side). I think I am also going to get a diffuser to add to the system
although that would mean getting rid of the spray bar, which I like.
Anyway, I think I made an excellent choice with this filter. Tank looks
great, and there's no obvious noise to contend with.
