        An undergravel filter sets
        beneath the gravel in an
        aquarium. An air pump pushes
air bubbles to the bottom of
the filter. As the air bubbles
race back up to the water's survface,
the aquarium water is pulled down
through the gravel bed and up the
        riser tube behind the bubbles.

        Water is pulled down thorugh
        the gravel bed. The surface
of each piece of gravel grows
        healthy bacteria that clean the
        tank's water. This undergravel
filter uses every piece of gravel
        to biologicallly filter the
        aquarium.

The water drawn down into and
        through the gravel also draws
        debris like food bits, fish
        and snail feces, plant rubbish
        down into the gravel filter.
        Sometimes way too much debris
        builds us and the filer
        becomes a garbage trap.

        A hang-filter - like a Whisper -
        creates a current that
        rolls debris across the gravel.
It can then be sucked up and
into the filter box. There is
is trapped in the filter pads.

        Lots of hobbyists prefer the
        second filtration method.
        I think the hang-on filter
        was invented after the
        undergraval filter. Then
        the canister filter was invented.
        Then the wet-dry filter. And
        somewhere in all this the
        simple sponge filter came into
        widespread use.

        Lots of choices.
