A local fish store has one of these set up right by the cash register. Supposedly they move them all the time. 5 1/2 gallon tank, a inch of laterite, 1 to 2 inches of fine gravel. Pack with easy live plants, a neon tetra or two, sparking gourami, small small small honey or flame gourami. You can carry it home water and all I guess. I think it was $179, seems high, but it is an instant planted tank. Very cool idea in my opinion.

And no, I don't know if plants can use less gravel, this did look sort of goofy with the think substrate.

I don t know about that. Granted a 5.5 is small, but I have seen some awesome setups in these size tanks. Personally, I think that they would be more trouble

Personally, I think that they would be more trouble than they are worth considering how unstable the environment would be and how much maintenance would be required.. I have a couple of WebPages bookmarked that has images of 5 gal tanks with a specialty theme in them. I'll see if I can find these links and post them tonight.

        Tom,
This might sound dumb, but as I was cleaning my 5.5 gallon aquarium last night I had a conversation about this with my husband.  A 5.5 gallon aquarium is SO small that I was wondering how you would ever plant live plants in it.  The 2-3" of gravel would fill up 1/3 of the aquarium.  That would leave very little room for plants.  Are there some real plants that would work well with less gravel?

          Hi all,
5.5 gal is HUGE, to someone who has a 2 gallon heavily planted tank
with 6 cardinal tetras, 6 rasboras and a corydoras.
Tank has been up for over a year. All original fish still very
          healthy.
Tank has about an inch of gravel. Most plants I use are ones who
don't care if they root or not. i.e. they send out roots from the
stem, such as hygrophilia, ludwigia, cabomba, rotala . Also java
fern, moss and annubia work well because they can be rooted onto
something else. Most crypts and apontagens will also work.
I use a millenium mini filter and change the cartidge about monthly.
          I do 20% water changes bi-weekly.
I'm careful to not overfeed, so they are fed small amount twice per
day, twice a week a sinking pellet is dropped for the catfish.
          occasional live food.
Use a full spectrum 18w plant bulb.
I'll try to take some pictures and post them to:
          http://community.webshots.com/user/adoucette
          later today or tomorrow.

I have one that is actually smaller than this, it's 2.5g. and probably
closer to 2 gallons of actual water. I have 1.5" of substrate
(flourite/sand) and everything I've ever planted in there has done well. I
don't have a recent picture but I'm putting in an old one, my second attempt
at rearranging things. I'm on number three at the moment, which looks
drastically different, after getting some good advice from TAOPA-list on how
to improve it. At the moment I have nice thick dwarf hairgrass stretch
across the foreground, a java moss wall, stargrass, babys tears, didiplis
            diandra and rotalla wallichii.
To be honest, this tank has been my EASIEST tank to maintain by far. So
far the worst thing to happen to this tank is that it's had to endure my
attempts at aquascaping. <G> I don't do anything special to it and I've
killed every houseplant I've ever had pretty much, so I know it's not talent
on my part. But it's always had good growth, everything I've planted has
thrived, never had an algae problem, water quality has always been fine and
the fish are happy campers. Now my bigger attempts at plant tanks on the
            other hand... oy vey.
There is a good display of small planted tanks on the AGA contest site.
http://showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org Both this years and the previous
years have several very pretty small aquascapes. There was a Japanese (I
*think*) site in a TAOPA post awhile back when we were discussing
mini-tanks... any listies have it? I know I saved it but where I can't
remember for the life of me!

Your tank describes the *exact* population I want for my next little "mini" 5 gallon.  I almost did it with this one, but I couldn't find any healthy cardinals.  Plus, I was going through Betta withdrawal. :-) Can't wait to see the pics of your tank.  Does the light sit on the tank, or is it suspended?

              Hi all,
5.5 gal is HUGE, to someone who has a 2 gallon heavily planted tank
with 6 cardinal tetras, 6 rasboras and a corydoras.

the placement of the tank to get a decent picture. And the tank is in
need of some pruning. (Some complain of problems growing plants, my
problem is having the time to cut the things back!!!)
But what the heck, the fish seem to like it and where they are they
provide an interesting thing to look at, where one would not expect
                  to find a tank.

Those are great pics, Arthur. The thing that amazed me is the growth of the plants from October to February. I suppose I still have hope! Well done, sir!

                      Thanks,
I should update them again, hard to believe how much it has grown in
just the month since the last pics were taken.
The flower stalk from the Amazon "found" the top corner of the 20 gal
tank and now has a foot tall plant growing from it, with roots all
the way down to the gravel! The flower stalk heading towards the
window found a potted plant and there is now a new plant growing
                      along with my wifes diffenbachia.
I'm afraid I'm going to have to do something about that sword though.
It is taking over the tank! The new leaf stalks are fully an inch
across at the base, the leaves over a foot long, I've had to put
braces and ties to move the leaves out from under the lights as they
were beginning to shade the tank big time.
