With Law Against Him, Singapore Pol Says He’s Gay

      by Satish Cheney

      Associated Press

      Tuesday Jul 2, 2013

SINGAPORE -- This conservative city-state convicted men for homosexual behavior as recently as seven years ago, and the British colonial-era law it used is still on the books. The government shows no interest in making a change: The prime minister’s advice has been to just let things be.

Opposition official Vincent Wijeysingha isn’t taking that advice. On his Facebook page last week, he became the first Singaporean politician to come out of the closet, and he is advocating for the law to be scrapped.

      Op-ed: Ex-Gay Isn't Exactly Over

Is the 'new' Exodus International a kinder, gentler 'ex-gay' ministry?

      BY Rev. Mel White

      June 25 2013 2:17 PM ET

In the past few days, many have celebrated the headline “Exodus International Closes Down.” And we should rightfully thank Alan Chambers for his confession that “ex-gay therapy” does not work and for his apology for the “pain and hurt” it has cost so many of us. I saw Alan issue his apology at the last Exodus conference. He was sincere and contrite. Even if you don’t trust Alan’s motives, you have to admit that his confession and apology are a giant step forward in undermining the credibility of those who continue to hold out the false promises made by the ex-gay movement.

Gay Pride Banner Could Prompt South Louisiana Flag Limit

      Associated Press

      Sunday Jul 7, 2013

LAFAYETTE, La. - A south Louisiana official says he’s drafting a proposal to limit the types of flags that can be flown on government property after hearing complaints about a gay pride flag being hoisted temporarily in a local park.

Andy Naquin, a Lafayette City-Parish councilman, told The Daily Advertiser (http://bit.ly/12jcHDK) that he was contacted by a military veteran who was offended that a gay pride group flew the rainbow flag June 30 in Girard Park, which is Lafayette Consolidated Government property.

Arson, Torture and Murder Devastate LGBT Activists in Cameroon

      Post by Peter Montgomery

Earlier this month we reported on Born this Way, a documentary about LGBT rights activists working in Cameroon amid denunciations from religious leaders and threats of violence. Today comes the crushing news, via Human Rights Watch, that LGBTI activist Eric Ohena Lembembe has been tortured and killed, and that the headquarters of Alternatives-Cameroun, the HIV services organization featured in the documentary as a refuge for so many people, has been burned down.

Some Gay-Rights Activists Regret Focus on Marriage

        by David Crary

        Associated Press

        Thursday Jul 18, 2013

Even as it celebrates victories in the push for same-sex marriage, America’s gay-rights movement is experiencing self-criticism and internal divisions over its approach to other thorny issues.

Some activists say the nationwide marriage campaign, while worthwhile, has diverted energy and resources from causes that may be harder to market - such as rights for transgender people and advocacy to combat HIV and AIDS.

In spite of the numerous advances made by the LGBT rights movement over the past decade, and the widely held impression that American public’s attitudes towards LGBT citizens have greatly shifted for the better, a new poll finds that still more than 30 percent of people believe gay men and women can change their sexual orientation.

Evangelical Christians are becoming more tolerant of gays and lesbians and supportive of civil unions, according to a new study by Baylor University.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Christian college in Waco, Texas, surveyed more than 1,700 respondents across the country and found that almost a fourth of evangelicals surveyed were not opposed to civil unions, even though they morally opposed homosexuality.
