A Vatican diplomat has told the United Nations Human Rights Council that people who criticise same-sex relations are increasingly being attacked and vilified for their views.

Teenage Boy Scout Denied Organization's Top Rank Because He's Gay

      by Eyder Peralta

      October 05, 201212:56 PM

Ryan Andresen spent 12 years as a Boy Scout. Now that he's 17 and about to graduate from high school, he completed the final requirement to receive the Eagle Scout award, which signifies the highest rank in the organization.

Except, according to his mother, Karen, when he submitted the paperwork, the scoutmaster for Troop 212 in the San Francisco Bay Area told him he could not give him the Eagle Scout honor because Andresen is gay.

Sports in the United States have been making strides, albeit small ones, in combating homophobia inside the lines. On another hemisphere, Australian rugby has been proven a leader in acceptance and respect - both athletically and socially.

Australian Rules footballer Jason Ball was the spearhead for change when he became the first player in his sport to come out of the closet.

The findings, released Thursday, were based on interviews with more than 121,000 people. Gallup said it is the largest study ever aimed at calculating the nation’s LGBT population.

Video: Preacher in Missouri gives speech on LGBT rights with a surprise ending

A video of a speech by a preacher in Springfield Missouri has gone viral because it contains a twist, where he uses the example of speeches by pro-segregation preachers from the 1960s, replacing the word ‘integration’ with the word ‘gay rights’.

A new poll has found that a majority of US voters think the Boy Scouts of America should drop its ban on gay scouts, volunteers and staff.

Religious sponsors loom large in Boy Scouts’ policy debate

        Adelle M. Banks | Feb 6, 2013

(RNS) The decision by Boy Scouts of America to postpone any change in policy about gay membership was fueled by an “outpouring of feedback.” Much of that reaction came from a sector with strength in numbers: the religious groups that comprise the majority of the Scouts’ chartered organizations.

On Monday (Feb. 4), two days before the BSA’s announcement, the Religious Relationships Task Force met for a regularly scheduled meeting with an unexpected topic on its agenda: a possible drop of the Scouts’ ban on gay members and leaders.

A Look at What’s Ahead for the Boy Scouts and LGBT Community

        by Nomaan Merchant

        Associated Press

        Friday Feb 8, 2013

A final decision on the Boy Scouts of America’s policy of excluding gays has been pushed to a larger, more representative sample of Scouting: the organization’s national council, with 1,400 voting members.

Earlier this week, the BSA’s national executive board met for three days without reaching a decision on the policy, so the board assigned its committees to draft a resolution that will be considered at a meeting in May, to be held in Grapevine, Texas, outside Dallas.

With Law Against Him, Singapore Pol Says He’s Gay

          by Satish Cheney

          Associated Press

          Tuesday Jul 2, 2013

SINGAPORE -- This conservative city-state convicted men for homosexual behavior as recently as seven years ago, and the British colonial-era law it used is still on the books. The government shows no interest in making a change: The prime minister’s advice has been to just let things be.

Opposition official Vincent Wijeysingha isn’t taking that advice. On his Facebook page last week, he became the first Singaporean politician to come out of the closet, and he is advocating for the law to be scrapped.

          Op-ed: Ex-Gay Isn't Exactly Over

Is the 'new' Exodus International a kinder, gentler 'ex-gay' ministry?

          BY Rev. Mel White

          June 25 2013 2:17 PM ET

In the past few days, many have celebrated the headline “Exodus International Closes Down.” And we should rightfully thank Alan Chambers for his confession that “ex-gay therapy” does not work and for his apology for the “pain and hurt” it has cost so many of us. I saw Alan issue his apology at the last Exodus conference. He was sincere and contrite. Even if you don’t trust Alan’s motives, you have to admit that his confession and apology are a giant step forward in undermining the credibility of those who continue to hold out the false promises made by the ex-gay movement.

Gay Pride Banner Could Prompt South Louisiana Flag Limit

          Associated Press

          Sunday Jul 7, 2013

LAFAYETTE, La. - A south Louisiana official says he’s drafting a proposal to limit the types of flags that can be flown on government property after hearing complaints about a gay pride flag being hoisted temporarily in a local park.

Andy Naquin, a Lafayette City-Parish councilman, told The Daily Advertiser (http://bit.ly/12jcHDK) that he was contacted by a military veteran who was offended that a gay pride group flew the rainbow flag June 30 in Girard Park, which is Lafayette Consolidated Government property.

Arson, Torture and Murder Devastate LGBT Activists in Cameroon

          Post by Peter Montgomery

Earlier this month we reported on Born this Way, a documentary about LGBT rights activists working in Cameroon amid denunciations from religious leaders and threats of violence. Today comes the crushing news, via Human Rights Watch, that LGBTI activist Eric Ohena Lembembe has been tortured and killed, and that the headquarters of Alternatives-Cameroun, the HIV services organization featured in the documentary as a refuge for so many people, has been burned down.

Some Gay-Rights Activists Regret Focus on Marriage

            by David Crary

            Associated Press

            Thursday Jul 18, 2013

Even as it celebrates victories in the push for same-sex marriage, America’s gay-rights movement is experiencing self-criticism and internal divisions over its approach to other thorny issues.

Some activists say the nationwide marriage campaign, while worthwhile, has diverted energy and resources from causes that may be harder to market - such as rights for transgender people and advocacy to combat HIV and AIDS.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Christian college in Waco, Texas, surveyed more than 1,700 respondents across the country and found that almost a fourth of evangelicals surveyed were not opposed to civil unions, even though they morally opposed homosexuality.
