      Reconciling Ministries Network Press Release

40 UM Activists gathered in Atlanta to launch "The Church within a
      Church"

Chicago, February 18, 2002: United Methodists from across the country
convened in Atlanta February 8-9 to launch the Church Within A Church
(CWC) movement. The Church Within a Church movement is committed to
create and support faithful communitites of grace, mercy and justice
where all persons are empowered to live as God created them.

"In the midst of the struggle for inclusion, this movement makes a
clear commitment to reclaiming the Wesleyan tradition of radical
obedience to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The intent is to provide a
nurturing environment for those who are involved and committed to
full inclusiveness. It also challenges a church bent on exclusivity,"
says Rev. Greg Dell, co-convener of CWC."

CWC commit themselves to full inclusion of all persons without regard
to status or economic conditions and celebrating race, color,
national origin, sexual orientation and gender identities.

      CWC will:

*Embody a theological foundation within the Wesleyan tradition
      *Grow a network
      *Create resources
*Start new local churches and revive present ones

"The [CWC]'s forward thinking work is inline with our commitment to a
truly diverse denomination which embodies the radical gospel of
welcome", Dan Vera, director of United Methodists of Color.

The Church Within A Church is part of the Reconciling Ministries
Network, a national network of United Methodist-focused organizations
advocating for the full inclusion of persons of all sexual
orientations and gender identities into the life of the Church.
Founded in 1984, RMN consists of 176 United Methodist congregations,
24 campus ministries, and over 17,000 individual members.
Organizations involved include the Parent's Reconciling Network,
United Methodists of Color, RMN student movement, and the Clergy
Alliance. For additional information about Church Within A Church or
