According to the EPA, an estimated 39.7 million tons of food is thrown away every year. This equates to over half of the food grown, processed, and transported. 50 million Americans have food insecurity, however, enough nutritious calories are grown and produced each year to feed every American. This webinar will discuss these and other facts and figures about our food supply and the problem of hunger in our country.
Shannon Barbuto, Regional Fresh Produce Sourcer for Feeding America will explain how her non-profit organization and a collation of other NPO's and retail food industry representatives are developing strategies to address this problem.
Pete Pearson, Sustainability Director for SUPERVALU will explain how his company is creating an effective logistics program through which grocery stores can more efficiently source fresh food from local farmers and develop closed-loop waste cycles to reduce food waste.
