      Hi All,
Saturday I headed to the Macomb Raceway in Macomb Illinois for the
regular show that includes the figure eight cars once a month. This is
an old facility that has been updated with an improved track. They
have widened the 1/5 mile and banked the track while adding a concrete
block wall around the dirt oval. There were tires marking the inside
and outlining the figure eight path through the infield. They start
early and with small car counts (14 modifieds, 8 1200cc mini sprints
and 16 figure eight) would be done just after 9PM. The track surface
was loose and got rough and dusty. The 7 heats went pretty well with
only a short delay when Jarrod Anderson rolled in a figure eight heat.
Kevin Lyles won the semi for the figure eight cars to get the last
transfer spot. The mini sprints went 20 laps non-stop for the first
feature with pole sitter Will Archdale holding off a couple of
challenges from Austin Archdale before Will got the win. The modifieds
were scheduled for 20 laps or 20 minutes and had trouble completing
laps. There were 6 spins in the first half of the race and then the
time limit came into play and the drivers were shown the green, white
and checkered indicating the race would run only two more laps. Shane
Lewis held the lead from the pole although Chuck Mitchell had moved to
second from 6th. They held their positions to the end and Steve Smith
was third while Donovan Lodge came from 12th to finish 4th. The figure
eight feature was scheduled for 12 laps to end the night. An unlucky
13 cars would start the tragic event. Jarrod Anderson was repaired
from his heat race flip and had just taken the lead when Kevin Lyles
hit a marker tire and overturned bringing out the red flag. LylesÂ’ car
then burst into flames that needed all the fire extinguishers and
finally the water truck to extinguish. The driver was unable to get
out and pronounced dead at the scene.
