      Hi All,
Monday I left for Ohio to see some of the All Star Sprint races on the
Ohio Speedweek tour. The Monday stop was the Wayne County Speedway in
Orrville Ohio for the Pete Jacobs Memorial. This facility had the
concession stand burn down a few weeks ago but with a big tent in place
they are back in business now. The track is a long, tight 3/8-mile dirt
paperclip shape with double Armco around the track except for the
backstretch where there is some runoff area and then tire barriers. The
third and fourth turns are banked more than one and two and the lights
are good from three tall poles in the infield. However that means you
are looking at the dark side of the cars as they pass in front of you
and it is difficult to make out the numbers. The speakers were OK and
the announcers gave names and lineups. The All-Stars had 56 sprints and
there were also 30 late models. I arrived very late at 9PM after some
extra time going through Chicago but they were just starting the first
heat after qualifying both classes. There was a very large crowd nearly
filling the long 18-row stands and more than filling the parking lot as
cars were parked at neighbors and in the aisles of the lot. Visibility
is hampered by the spectators to your side because you have to look
down such a long straight too. The track was dry and very dusty with
passing very difficult and the groove was one lane on the bottom. Greg
Wilson, Lee Jacobs and Paul May won sprint heats from the front. Lee
Starks got upside down on the start of the second heat for the only
flip of the night. Donnie Moran did some passing in the late model
first heat and won that one. Craig Mintz took the C-main from 6th.
Kenny Jacobs won the dash and fast Qualifier Dustin Daggett won the
sprint semi from the pole. Shane Stewart started from the pole and led
the whole 40-lap feature which was slowed by 4 yellows. Dale Blaney was
second and Danny Smith came home third. The best passing job was done
by Wilson coming from 21st to finish 8th as he carefully got underneath
car after car running against the tire markers. The late models went 25
laps with Moran leading the whole race from the pole too. Ryan Markham
ran close and finished second in a race slowed only twice by spins.
