Post-doctoral fellow position
The Department of Social and Economic Geography, Umeå University, Sweden, is looking for a post-doctoral fellow (unfortunately in the announcement translated directly from Swedish as 'research assistant'). The department welcomes not least applications from researchers with interest in tourism. The tourism research group at the department comprises currently one professor, one associate professor and two assistant professors with research interests in second homes, nature-based tourism, indigenous tourism and regional development particularly within northern peripheries. The department is also offering tourism programs at undergraduate and graduate level and is the most productive academic department in Sweden regarding the number of awarded Ph.D.-degrees specializing on tourism.

Research assistant in social and economic geography

The appointment is for two years but can be extended by a further two years.

A person who has taken a doctors degree in social and economic geography or an equivalent subject, or
who has a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate is qualified for appointment as research
assistant. Priority will be given to candidates who have completed their degree no more than three years
before the last date for applications, but candidates who have completed their degree no more than five
years before the last date for applications will also be considered for appointment.
Assessment for the appointment shall be based on the degree in which a candidate possesses the skill required
to qualify for appointment. Furthermore, regard shall be paid to the degree in which a candidate
possesses administrative and other skills of importance, taking into account the subject matter determined
by the university for the position and the duties that the position will involve. Moreover, regard shall be
paid to the degree in which a candidate possesses skills in developing and managing activities and staff at
the university and aptitude in interacting with the surrounding community and informing people about research
and development projects. Qualification requirements for the appointment are stated in Chapter 4
Sect. 10 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Assessment grounds for the appointment are stated in
Chapter 4 Sect. 15 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
In connection with the appointment of a research assistant, special weight shall be accorded to academic
skills. If there is an unequal distribution of women and men in respect of positions (two or more) as
research assistant or other form of postdoctoral appointment with an emphasis on research, the
underrepresented sex will be given priority if the qualifications of the candidates are equally good.
The person appointed will be expected to spend most of his/her working time in Umeå and to participate
in departmental activities.
