County Wants Your Input On Draft Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan

Hillsborough County will hold a series of public meetings to discuss and get public comment on the draft Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan which local governments and community organizations have been developing over the past year. This is a plan that details how the county will redevelop and return to normal after any major disaster, such as a hurricane.

Approximately 90 members from local governments and agencies, community and social service organizations, citizens groups and private residents have been meeting monthly since 2008 to draft this plan. The draft Plan covers the subjects of health and social services; housing; land use; infrastructure; environmental restoration; economic redevelopment; financial administration; and public outreach.

The Plan also emphasizes seizing opportunities for hazard mitigation and community improvement, in line with the goals of the local comprehensive plan and with full participation of the citizens. The final Plan will be submitted for approval by the County Commission later this year.

Hillsborough County was selected by the Florida Department of Community Affairs to be one of five pilot communities in the state to create a long-term post-disaster redevelopment plan (PDRP). The PDRP is a requirement for all coastal communities and municipalities.

At these meetings, residents will be able to hear about the Plan, look at the draft components, and make comments. For more information about this project or to submit your comments on the Plan electronically, go to the County's website at www.hillsboroughcounty.org, click on the "A-Z Index" link and then select "Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan."
