I suppose Longfellow might have just arrived at the metre independently – it’s hardly difficult!
The metre is familiar to us because Longfellow used it in the "Song of Hiawatha."
By the shores of Geetchee Gumi
By the shining Big-Sea-Water
Stood the wigwam of Nokomis
Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis. . .
