Group Description

This group is to share info about Chief Phil Crazybulls journey to the spirit world...

Phil Crazybull/Tatanka Weitko was born in 1950 in the Rosebud reservation in South Dakota. Born Phil Cummings, he was a Sicagu Lakota medicine man, Sundance Chief, Yuwipi man & Heyoka . Phil died in his sleep of a massive heart attack in Albuquerque New Mexico on Wednesday January 18th, 2006. Plans are being made for burial & memorial services in Rosebud South Dakota. (dateTBA soon). Chief Leonard Crowdog will conduct services for his beloved Chief Crazybull.
Phil’s compassion for people came from his own experiences of living in poverty on the Rez to living on Skid row in Los Angeles. He knew what it was to live poor,to suffer addictions & how to overcome them. He could therefore understand those who came to him for help.
For a time Phil lived in California, participating in Funmaker’s Eagle Lodge in San Pedro. He told stories about Crowdog tracking him down on Skid Row to give him money to stay alive, how he would end up drinking it away, how he met John Funmaker and feigned that he didn’t know anything about Indian ceremonies when in fact he was already a recognized healer but was trying to run from his inevitable fate. He told stories of how he was cedar boy when he was about five years old. Phil spent most of his early years with his grandmother. When he finally tired of drinking he was sent to the grandmothers for healing. Grandma would have him move everything & then decide to move it all again. Whatever the grandmother wanted he had to do no complaints.
Recently Phil took on the role of Sundance Chief & ran the Sundance on Navajo Nation at Saint Michaels Arizona. We pray to Tunkashila behold this simple man who did something good for the people. Take him into your heart & love him as we did. Let his spirit grow stronger & send him back to us in a song, a breeze, a whisper or a healing that we may know that he lives on...
