Ok.. well, as you'll remember from my ff authors notes, I was involved in helping to write a tender for an Job Network contract. We were advised that we were successful, and in fact are the only specialist JN provider in Australia for blind and vision impaired people. I don't know if the other agencies even tendered for JN or not, but they are still running Disability Employment Network contracts (as we do). The two programs are similar, but since not everyone is eligible for DEN, we decided we needed to deliver both.
Anyway, the point is that the tender writing broke my fic writing routine. Add in the Christmas break with family obligations and that helped delay my return to writing. I got caught up on my backlog of fics to read, then just kept reading...
And then I read a messge that its been six months since I've written a chapter. Truthfully, I've always assumed I would just get back to writing, and believe it's just a case of coming up with a way to continue the story from where I've got it.
The problem is, that when I was writing before, everything flowed without any need to think of what was coming up. I already had some ideas for particular plot devices that I intended to use, and the rest of it was writing itself.
Thinking about it now though, I keep asking myself where I actually intend to take the story, and more importantly (to me), what do I intend to do differently getting there than dozens of other writers before me? So far, I don't have answers, and I have a bunch of scenes coming up that have been done to death (eg, Harry getting the pensieve for one, plus a bunch of others).
So the main thing I can keep focussing on is the relationships between the characters - yet some reviewers are asking about plot. which brings me back to the question; What is my plot? Do I really just want to write a story about the characters and their interactions? Which, come to think of it, is pretty much what Miss Anthropic did with one of my fave stories (Vox Corporis).
I've found that the process of this pondering is much like Hamlet's; 'To write or not to write, that is the question..', and I've kind of got stalled on the 'must give us pause..' stage. 'Thus the native hue of resoluton is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought, And enterprises of great pitch and moment with this regard, their currents turns awry, and lose the name of action..'
A couple of things that I think should provide some reassurance to those wondering if or when I will continue.. Firstly, one of the reasons I started writing in the first place was because I'd run out of fics to read (or reread), and I'm about at that stage again. Still, there are a lot of good new fics that I'm enjoying as new chapters come out.
Secondly, I've got a beta working on the early chapters (I think we've finished 6 and finalising 7 now), so every time I get an edited chapter back I'm having to think about the story again before sending the changes back. All of which stimulates interest of course.
> If you need any help, I'm willing to bounce ideas back and forth, as are probably most of the people here. Just ask and we'll do what we can.Well, it can't hurt to bounce ideas around, though the trouble is they will become major spoilers.. I think if I were in a group like that I'd probably withdraw so as not to have to read them. So, if we do get involved in discussions about ideas, I think we'll either have to do it in another group (maybe the audio fic one I set up?) or just do it via emails.
I'm more than happy to discuss existing chapters, scenes, characters, motivations, or whatever else is already known if you like. I suspect it's only natural that the more I talk about it, the more I'll focus on it, and the more I do that, the greater the likelihood of new ideas and plot being stimulated, and therefore new chapters.
Anyway, I think I've still got some edited chapters to upload to this group as well, so I'll try and get those done sometime today. I have got a trip planned this afternoon to go and see the new Star Trek movie, so check the dates before downloading any of the early chapters again.
Thanks for the prompt, Kevin
