December 2009 Paralegals in the News Selfless Service: Military Paralegal Postpones College to Serve
While typical college students head into the "stretch run" of the current fall term, several collegians have withdrawn from their studies to deploy with the West Virginia Army National Guard's 151st Military Police Battalion in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Just months removed from everything that accompanies college life, these students now face the daily rigors of life at Camp Al Taqaddum, Iraq.
Spc. Joshua O. Walker, a 22-year-old paralegal specialist from Dunbar, W.Va., is a business major at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va. For the last 13 years I have been teaching an "Introduction to the Paralegal Profession" class at a local Atlanta Paralegal Certificate program. I taught this course from what I affectionately called the "Paralegal Bible" which is also known as William "Bill" Statsky's "Introduction to Paralegalism." I considered this legal tome to be one of the ultimate resource guides for the Paralegal profession as it gave practical advice and presented issues of importance to the Paralegal profession. One of those issues discussed in the text was the Tweener or Swoose Syndrome. The Swoose Syndrome refers to someone who is part swan and part goose. The Tweener Syndrome refers to someone who falls between two categories and as applicable to the Paralegal profession, typically refers to someone who performs both clerical and attorney tasks. Paralegal Superstar December 2009: Darlene McLellanDarlene McLellan's legal career began in January 1986 with the County of San Diego Probation Department and on to Superior Court, as a Superior Court Clerk. In 1990, Darlene commenced work in the private sector with a small estate planning and Family Law Office supporting three attorneys.
During her career, Darlene has specialized in family law; however, she has lengthy experience in criminal defense, civil litigation and probate.
