STATUS: For 48 years this hiking group served a very important purpose. But times have changed. Today people, especially young people, are able to easily connect with each other thru the web. As a direct consequence, this group failed to continue to attract those young people. Our membership grew older, retired from hiking, moved away, or migrated to the more organized OutVentures group. This is not a bad thing. Things have steadily gotten better for the gay community. We're a long way from where we were 48 years ago. Let’s celebrate that.
HISTORY: The Hiking Group began as one of many activity groups under the sponsorship of the now defunct Dorian Society, a 1967 vintage Seattle gay rights organization. The Dorian Society didn't survive beyond the mid-70s, but the hiking group continued through the years. We began in 1968 as a summer-only group, but in 1974 there was a long drought period and we just kept going into that winter. The group was never organized. We have never had officers. The only voting has been Sunday mornings when deciding where to go. But over the years there have been a number of men who have shepherded the group: Ken Hoole, Glen Hunt, Pete Ceander, and Leigh Champlin come to mind immediately.
