Group Description

In the 17th through the early 19th centuries, fossilists were men and women who admired and collected fossils of every imaginable kind, from invertebrates to vertebrates, and the impressions of leaves and tracks in the stone. They were attracted equally to the aesthetic and scientific value of these traces of prehistoric life. Some fossilists were entrepreneurs (like Mary Anning) to whom we owe the birth of amateur paleontology; others, like William Smith, the "Father of English Geology," Alexander von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin made significant contributions to the development of historical geology and evolutionary theory. Lovers of fossils have a diverse, grand heritage!

This list is for those who collect fossils both for their "art" and scientific value. It's a list for 21st century fossilists to share their passion; to discuss the challenge of collecting, displaying, preserving, and studying their treasures of the Past. New and veteran collectors are welcome to join and encourage one another in this important and fascinating hobby.
