Walmart is indeed going to close it's fabric and craft departments nationwide . Supposedly, they are "testing the waters" but there seems to be no plan to bring them back if thinks do not turn out the way they think it will. We all need a reliable source of cheaper fabrics . I use their $1.87 cotton to line all my bodices. The sewers in my community will need to drive 1 hour minimum to get to the next nearest sewing center which are Jo-Ann Fabric stores. Don't get me wrong. I use Jo-Anns a lot but I can't afford to take a trip all the time when I need just bare essentials to finish a sewing project.
Where else can you get cotton velveteen for $6.59 a yard. Yes, they only got it around the fall but I stocked up every year and some of the capes I made from it are 8 years old and still going strong even after repeated washings. Their sequined fabric was priced lower than anyone else's and Okay , so they do eventually wash off the fabric, but at that price it still lasted long enough.
Go to Google and put in Walmart petition and you can fill out the petition quickly and easily. Please tell everyone you know. Do it now!

these days because I am so opposed to their business practices, but on
the other hand, there is almost nowhere to buy fabric anymore. I've
heard that some Jo-Anns don't sell it at all anymore and I have noticed
the supply being downsized at my local Jo-Ann's. I don't know what
us costumers who live outside L.A. or N.Y. are going to do when all the
fabric stores go out of business.

Denver fabrics online, fabrics.com are really helpful in situations.
I think like everything, one day theyw ill see that alarge part of their profits are gone. Now that they took away fabrics, layaway and HAnes active wear and basically ahve turned themselves into a high price 7 eleven as far as choices go, we may ina few years see a dive.

                    Unfortunately, I don't thin that's true. I wouldn't put it passed
them to lie. My mother works in the fabric department at a Walmart
and she told me quite awhile ago that there were plans to close it.
She wasn't sure exactly when. It's worse for her because Walmart
essentially drove other fabric and craft suppliers out of business in
her area. I'm sorry for everyone who is dependant on them. I guess
the internet will be the best option.

I'm trying to find a source for Roman or Egyptian-style sandals, the type that have leather straps which go up to the knee. Ideally, I'd like to purchase them (new or used), but would consider rental as well. I'm definitely NOT interested in the vinyl "spats" that are worn over a modern sandal, nor do I want to just wrap ribbon or elastic around the actors' legs. Our audience is too close to the stage for us to be able to get away with that.

I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thank you!

Clearly, the person you spoke with is not informed. Afterall, how many times have you heard of layoffs, and the employee is the very last person to know? ;-D

Perhaps Walmart is only closing some of their stores. My info came from people who had been informed by headquarters that they would be closing down by April. I have seen this person repeatedly and have been urged to tell as many people as possible because they know how many of their customers would be adversely affected. Maybe your local Walmart is not closing. Anyway it would be a shame.
On another note, I have two Jo-Ann Fabric stores, both an hours drive away. One is much larger than the other but poorly run. There is never enough help and service is slow. Also, their selection is not as good as the smaller one. The smaller store of the two is well run, well stocked, their service is great and it is always busy when I go there. Perhaps , Jo-Ann's head office is looking at closing some of their stores for the usual reasons. Anyway , I am worried about any fabric stores closing for any reason. We do not have enough of them now.

in the next year or two rather than this quarter. It is clearly still a
concern, and though I buy lots of stuff on Ebay and the internet, I need to
feel the fabric, and that’s not going to change.
