HI,

I am in need of an accurate 1880s, plain, straw
bonnet. Does anyone out there know of where to find
one. I have found many 1860s and 1800s straw bonnets
but nothing that comes close to an 80s. Any help would
be much appreciated.

Steph

fans at. If it is for Civil War Battenburg lace is
inapropriate. It wasn't around. Go to
www.originals-by-kay.com. She has great fabric,
clothing, bonnets, fans. She is very well reasearched.
She does what you want as long as it would be
appropriate for the time period.

If you go to my site and look at the widow's fashion
article I have pics of the dress she made me. My links
page also has her web add.

Hope this is of some help.

Hi-
Just thought I would add this in.
While the name Battenburg, has not been arround since
the Civil War. That example of lace has existed since
what is believed to have been the 16th century.
However it did not exist under the name of Battenburg.

Tape lace is what Battenburg is. And I believe tape
lace is the name in existed under (have to check my
books for the exact name)and there are several places
that have pieces of remaining samples. Infact, I
believe the Smithsonian textile department has an
example of tape lace that is dated to the 1600's.
While it is not an exact duplicate to what we see now
as Battenburg Lace, it is also not far off. Again if
my memory serves me correctly, the old examples of
tape lace is more detailed and ornate. But as I said,
not far off from what we have today.

But you were absolutly right, the words Battenburg
Lace were 20th century words.
Hope this helps.
Terri

HI,

Thanks for the info. Would Civil War era ladies have
used what looked like modern Battenburg? I have found
in research that often times what we call something
today is totally different from what products of that
same name were in the Victorian era. Where on garments
was it used the most? Any other info you have on it
would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi-
Just thought I would add this in.
While the name Battenburg, has not been arround
since
the Civil War. That example of lace has existed
since
what is believed to have been the 16th century.
However it did not exist under the name of
Battenburg.

Tape lace is what Battenburg is. And I believe
tape
lace is the name in existed under (have to check
my
books for the exact name)and there are several
places
that have pieces of remaining samples. Infact, I
believe the Smithsonian textile department has an
example of tape lace that is dated to the 1600's.
While it is not an exact duplicate to what we see
now
as Battenburg Lace, it is also not far off. Again
if
my memory serves me correctly, the old examples of
tape lace is more detailed and ornate. But as I
said,
not far off from what we have today.

But you were absolutly right, the words Battenburg
Lace were 20th century words.
Hope this helps.
The vintage examples I have personally seen are
remarkably close to our modern examples of Battenburg
Lace.
I have seen examples of this sort of lace used on
fans, parasols, underpinnings and at the neck line, of
both day dresses and ball gowns.
I have also seen collars from the early 1800's that
were of the tape lace sort.

I have seen a dress skirt from 1840's that had the
lace applied to the dress hem, something like a
insert, just with the background still in place.

Tape lace was considered the "home made" lace and not
as fasionable as the finer laces we normally associate
with this era. Women would often take a piece of bias
tape and work it with a crochet hook into a decorative
pattern known as tape lace.
Our modern Battenburg lace is machine made and does
not have the intricate design the older tape lace has.
However from 3 to 5 feet away the two do look the
same.
Your very correct in saying that many times a name has
changed and the item is still pretty much the same. I
have also seen this as well. And that is exactly what
happened in this case.

Hope this helps.
Terri

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I would love to be able to get
into some of the collections of historic clothing at
museums. I used to work at Henry Ford Museum and
Greenfield Village. They have a great collection I am
told but they don't display most of it. My husband
used to be the Master Farmer at the 1880s farm. He is
now at a museum in IN. I may be able to get in to see
some of their stuff. What I would love to see is the
Royal Museum of Bath and their mourning collection.

Have you seen any mourning originals? Any helpful info
to give would be appreciated.

Thanks again,

fans, parasols, underpinnings and at the neck line,
of
both day dresses and ball gowns.
I have also seen collars from the early 1800's
that
were of the tape lace sort.

I have seen a dress skirt from 1840's that had the
lace applied to the dress hem, something like a
insert, just with the background still in place.

Tape lace was considered the "home made"
lace and not
as fasionable as the finer laces we normally
associate
with this era. Women would often take a piece of
bias
tape and work it with a crochet hook into a
decorative
pattern known as tape lace.
Our modern Battenburg lace is machine made and
does
not have the intricate design the older tape lace
has.
However from 3 to 5 feet away the two do look the
same.
Your very correct in saying that many times a name
has
changed and the item is still pretty much the same.
I
have also seen this as well. And that is exactly
what
happened in this case.

Hope this helps.
