      the hats to be: acrylic fabric paints. Any acrylic paint would do, but
      fabric paint does best on fabrics. Since a lot of your hats are browns and
      blacks, you might consider painting them straight from the tube. It might
      slick-up the hats, but maybe patting them with a piece of felt when they're
      almost dry would bring back some fabric texture (for a felt hat, any other
      hat would need a matching fabric texture for impression). You could try
      this with a ratty hat or with one of the botched-up trials from a previous
      coloring test, that way if it doesn't work you're not out another hat.
