I found a source that talks about my Holan ancestor in the early to mid-1600s.  It has the potentialto be a great source (I think), but the problem is that the language is early to mid-1600s Latin.  I can pick out some names and dates.  The pages are from 17th century land records.  One page is even titled with my ancestor's name and I can find the family name throughout as well as his son's name.  Is there someone fluent enough in old Latin to help with either transciption or translation?  I can work on the translation, but I can't even read it right now. Thanks in advance,Valorie Michna

I need help reading the Latin.  It is an old ledger where the entries are free form and in ink and pencil.  I read the little bit of Latin found in genealogy records, but this is a series of entries punctuated with a few words I understand (Holan, a family name, and some years), but that is it.

            Valorie,

Why don't you send in a link to the pages and let us see if we can help.  Like you, I can decipher most of the Latin used in the birth, marriage, and death records, but I've never attempted the land records.  Not sure if I can help with this, but I'll take a look at it and see if I can help.

These records are a few pages out of a volume of land records from 1606-1670 from Stara Bela, Moravia.  One of the sections is titled with my ancestor's name.  The next section has the family name in the title.  I can pick out the family name and years, but that is about it.  Also the writing is in ink and pencil making some of it harder to decipher than others.

As for the record being in Latin, my experience has been that prior to the late 1700s, records were recorded in Latin.  In the late 1700s records started being recorded in German Script and in the mid-1800s records can found in Czech in areas where Czechs were prominent.  In German speaking areas records were still in German into the late 1800s and early 1900s when my gr-grandparents emigrated.

If this was a genealogy record, I would muddle my way through it, but this is more complicated.

I can only read a few words of Czech, so it doesn't matter if it is in Czech.  I muddle through genealogy records, but anything more complicated is beyond my skill set.  I may have to look into professional help.

I once used a translation company in Brno, C.R. called Zelenka to help me with some genealogy work. It took some time to set up an account with them initially (as they want their money before they will release the translations to you via email), but it went pretty smoothly after the first couple of times. I did everything via email. It's rather expensive (they charge by the word), but it was worth it to me to get an "exact" translation.

                            Good luck!
