obit: Randy Joe Shafer - wife Hubenak
Randy Joe Shafer, 54, of Port Lavaca, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 in Victoria. Randy was born Sept. 28, 1955 in Port Lavaca to Joe Wesley and Wanda Bingham Shafer.
Randy was a lifelong resident of Port Lavaca, graduating from Calhoun High School in 1974. Randy was an employee for the Instrumentation Dept. of Dow Chemical for over 32 years. He also served on the Calhoun County Fair Board and Junior Livestock Auction Committee serving as its chairman for many years. He was a former member of the Calhoun County Sheriff's Reserve from 1975 to 1980. He was president of the Little League Baseball Association from 1990 to 1992. From 1995 until 1998 he was a school board member responsible for several school expansions during his term. He was the contact person for building the Calhoun High School softball field and rebuilding of the high school track. Randy also aided Stanley Mikula to rebuild the baseball field on Newlin St. to where it could be used again. Randy was an avid hunter, fisherman and boater who enjoyed spending time outdoors with family and friends.
In February 1977 he married Peggy Hubenak and they celebrated over 32 years of marriage.
Randy was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Willie Hubenak in January 2009.
He is survived by his loving wife Peggy; his parents, Joe "Shorty" and Wanda Shafer of Port Lavaca; daughter, Jenise Svetlik (Jason) of Port Lavaca; son, Justin Shafer of Kerrville; sister, Sheryll Kisiah (Johnny) of Port Lavaca; brother, Gary Shafer (Susan) of Mission Valley; one grandson, Avery Svetlik; mother-in-law, Celestine Hubenak of Port Lavaca; and a host of other relatives and close friends.
Visitation for Randy Joe Shafer will be held on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Grace Funeral Chapel in Port Lavaca. A rosary will follow at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 1, 2010 at Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic Church with Rev. Dan Morales officiating. Burial will follow in Six Mile Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ben Anderson, Don Lewis, Jeff Lewis, Jeff Dietzel, Roy January, Richard Hermes, John Shaw, and Craig Falcon. Honorary pallbearers will be the employees of Dow Chemical Company.
