Evelyn was born August 13, 1925 in Elk, the daughter of John and Mary (Piters) Smajstrla. She was a 1943 graduate of LaVega High School. On May 9, 1950, she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Cunningham in Waco. Bob preceded her in death on January 13, 1999. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elk. Evelyn was also a member of the West Garden Club and Houston Garden Club. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and sister. Her Czech heritage and hometown of Elk where she was born and retired to later in life with Bob formed the nucleus of her life although she had spent many years moving the family throughout Texas early in Bob's career – 10 times in almost as many years. She was an ardent gardener, wonderful cook, story teller, creative seamstress and crafter, joker and character. She touched everyone she knew in a positive way throughout her life. Her wit, smile, and positive outlook will be deeply missed by all. St Joseph's Church in Elk, where she was baptized, will be her final resting place.
Evelyn is also preceded in death by her parents; six sisters and three brothers.
Survivors include three sons, Robert Cunningham Jr. and wife Mary of Llano, David Cunningham and wife Helen of The Woodlands, and Frank Cunningham and wife Patti of Austin; a sister, Jonnie Lou Yowell and husband Bill; grandchildren, Andrew, Patrick, Elyse, and Jonathan Cunningham; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
