obit: Theresa Martinka Kubena
EL CAMPO - Theresa Kubena, 93 of El Campo, passed away on July 10, 2013.
She was born on October 14, 1919 in Corn Hill, Texas to the late Vaclav and Marie Anna Styskala Martinka. In 1938, Theresa graduated from St. Ludmila's Academy in Shiner, Texas. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she earned a degree in art. She graduated with a nursing degree in 1948 from Providence Hospital in Waco. As a nursing student, she served in the Women's Army Corps making bandages for the troops and working in the hospital. She was a registered nurse and worked at several hospitals and nursing homes in Ganado, Wharton and El Campo. She served as director of nurses at Nightingale Hospital and Hillje Czech Catholic Home.
She was an accomplished artist and painted may religious pictures of saints for St. Philip Catholic School and the ACTS retreats. Theresa was a member of the Legion of Mary, The Universal Living Rosary Association, Catholic Daughters of America and K.J.Z.T.
She is survived by her daughters Anna Marie Hubenak and husband Leonard of El Campo, Therese Patlovany and husband Robert of Westminster, Colorado, Monica Williams and husband Steve of Corpus Christi, and Imelda Loos and husband Kirk of Victoria; sons Mike Kubena, Daniel Kubena, Gerard Kubena and wife Louise, and Martin Kubena, all of El Campo, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and sister Lillian Freichs of Thrall.
Theresa was preceded in death by her parents; husband Pete Kubena; daughter Mary Carmelita; grandchildren Joshua and Chad Kubena; sisters Mary Kubacak, Angela Martinka, Margaret Kohoutek, Sister Angela Martinka and Sister Mary Ann Martinka; brothers Frank, Cyril, Wenc, Alphonse and Joe Martinka.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 12 from 5 - 7 pm at Triska Funeral Home with a Catholic Daughter Rosary at 7 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 13, 2013 at St. Philip Catholic Church with the Reverend Albert Yankey officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park.
Pallbearers are Cody Loos, Brian Hubenak, James Kubena, Mike Jeffries, Robert Patlovany, Steve Williams, Arthur Frerichs and Chris Williams.
Memorial donations in memory of Theresa Kubena may be made to the St. Philip School Endowment Fund.
