HOUSTONIAN DIED IN PLANE CRASH
PHOENIX, Ariz. – A Houston, Tex., man was killed Sunday when his crippled twin-engine airplane crashed just east of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport as he attempted an emergency landing.
Killed was Anthony J. Lala, 44.
Sky Harbor officials said Lala had landed shortly before noon with four passengers and said he had been experiencing minor engine trouble on a flight from Las Vegas, Nev. In Tucson, Ariz.
The passengers were identified as Lala’s wife, Marge; a cousin, John W. Shipp; Monroe Dra_e and Betty Bauer, all of Houston.
Shipp said Lala, an experienced pilot, made the unscheduled Phoenix stop to have the plane checked over, and was apparently testing it when the crash occurred.
