James "Jim" V. Valis, of San Antonio, Texas, entered eternal rest Friday, January 4, 2013 following a brief illness. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and devoted friend.

Jim was born in Shiner, Texas on August 26, 1932 to Joseph Valis and Mary Lahodny Valis. He graduated from St. Ludmila Academy, Shiner, Texas in 1950. In 1952 Jim joined the United States Army and served until 1955. After leaving the Army, Jim attended the University of Houston and later San Antonio College.

Jim was married to Carolyn Ann Babin at St. Anthony's Cathedral Basilica in Beaumont, Texas on June 14, 1958. Jim and Carolyn were married 54 years.

Jim worked as an auditor for Red Arrow Freight Lines for 29 years. Upon his retirement from Red Arrow he worked as an insurance instructor for Hermann Sons. Jim was a Fourth Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council 4351 for many, many years. He served as both Grand Knight and Navigator with Our Lady of Fatima Council. He was dedicated to this fraternal service organization and to providing charitable services. Jim was also involved in TPA for 25 years. In addition to these organizations, Jim and his wife, Carolyn traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe. They especially enjoyed taking many cruises, but the most memorable one was to commemorate their 50th wedding anniversary in which they cruised to Europe.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; daughter, Janet Bach and husband Russell; daughter, Mary Feltner and husband Jeff; sons-in-law, Tom Crane and Robert Spegar, as well as his eight grandchildren; Meaghan Cooper, Timothy Crane, Rebekah Feltner, Christine Bach, Brian Crane, Jaden Bach, Matthew Spegar and Michael Spegar. Jim is also survived by his brother, Bobby Valis and his wife, June of Goose Creek, South Carolina, sister Emily Winkenwerder of Shiner, Texas, and sister in law Maureen Valis of Mount Dora, Florida, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. All will dearly miss him.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter Susan Valis Crane Spegar, his parents Joseph and Mary Valis, and five of his siblings; Mary Kotrlik, Joe Valis, Agnes Michalec, Frank Valis Sr., and Laddie Valis.

The family of Jim Valis wishes to thank Father Jim Shea for spiritual guidance, blessings, and unwavering faith, Odyssey Hospice, especially his nurse, Pat, and close family friend Linda Ontiveros whose dedication and kindness will forever be remembered.
