Edward Gene Hayek, 'Mr. Ed', age 79, went to be with the Lord on March 28th, 2013. Mr. Ed was a life-long Nueces County farmer. He enjoyed working the land and tending his garden. He was born to Lillie Jurica Hayek and Joe W. Hayek in Nueces County on August 17, 1933. Mr. Ed was actively involved with Coastal Bend Gin & Grain Elevator serving as Manager for many years and on the Board of Directors. Growing up he was an exhibitor with the Nueces County Junior Livestock Show, and later served as General Superintendent for many years. Throughout his life he received a number of awards including Outstanding Farmer, District Volunteer and 4-H Leader, Outstanding Service Dedication to the Nueces County 4-H Program to name a few. His earlier joys were carpentry, wood working and welding, hunting and enjoying gatherings with family and friends. In later years, his favorite pastime was spending time at his ranch, the Broken Arrow, in Benavides, Texas. He was always looking out for others and now we are looking up and praying for him.
Mr. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Joe W. Hayek; his brother, Robert Lee Hayek and his son, Mark Shane Hayek.
Mr. Ed is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lela May Hayek; his daughter Lori (Jeff) Barrett; his mother Lillie Jurica Hayek (Joe); one sister, Wilma Hayek; one brother, David (Regina) Hayek; five grandchildren - Kate & Tristen Barrett, Cassie, Brody & Sarah Hayek and his great-grand daughter, Annabelle and many loving family members.
Pallbearers are Bernie Mokry, Tony Petri, Robert Lopez, Mike Polk, Charlie Farek, Tommy Ellis, Jerry Sijansky and Larry Hellmann. Honary pallbearers are Cassie, Brody, Sarah and Annabelle Hayek, and Kate and Tristen Barrett.
Visitation will be held at Memory Gardens on Monday, April 1st from 5pm-9pm. Family will be there from 4pm-6pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 2nd at 1:00 at Memory Gardens followed by a family and friends gathering at Sokol Hall at 5502 Kostoryz.
