obit: Nancy Kay Westphal Viktorin
Nancy Kay Westphal Viktorin, 51, of Smithville, Texas, passed away Monday (June 21, 2010) after an unexpected battle with cancer. She leaves behind her loving husband of 16 years, Paul; and two daughters, Elizabeth, 13, and Allison, 11.
Nancy was a 1976 graduate of Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School in Bradley, and a 2004 graduate of Southwest Texas State University with a degree in elementary education. After serving as a volunteer and substitute teacher in Smithville ISD, three years ago she joined the faculty of Brown Elementary School, where she implemented a program to help struggling readers. Her patience, gentle approach, creativity and three-legged classroom rabbit named Winnie, made learning to read fun. Nancy was a wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend to many. She was happiest when spending time with her two daughters. She found the greatest joy in being with them -- driving to dance lessons, attending recitals, cheering at athletic events, watching movies, playing games and helping with homework. She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, where she led the vacation Bible school program and served on the Parish Council. She served as an officer of the Smithville Little League. She was a compassionate individual who loved animals and always found time and energy to help them. Nancy's home also will be remembered as the location where "The Tree of Life" movie was filmed. The youngest of five children, Nancy was born Nov. 20, 1958, in Urbana.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Blanche Westphal; her brother, Douglas Westphal; and sister, Susan Hudson.
She is survived by stepmother, Rose Marie Westphal of Alton; and stepmother, Lillian Marie Tompkins of Kankakee. She is also survived by her siblings, Linda Leckrone of Midland, Mich., Richard Westphal of Hutchinson, Kan., Chris Fry of Austin, Texas, Lorie Colclasure of Custer Park and William Serle of Windsor, Colo.; their spouses; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral Mass was celebrated June 24, 2010 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jozek Musiol officiating. Interment followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. In recognition of Nancy's fondness for animals and love of youth activities, memorial gifts may be made to the Smithville Animal Shelter or Smithville Little League.
