obit: Martha Gladys Vavra Hoffman
Martha Gladys Hoffman, 89 of Caldwell passed away on Wednesday evening at St. Joseph Manor in Caldwell.
Martha was born January 2, 1922 in the New Tabor community of Burleson County to Frank and Johanna (Englemann) Varva. She was baptized as an infant and later confirmed at the new Tabor Brethren Church. Martha attended the New Tabor School from which she also graduated. She helped her parents and siblings work their farm and later met and married Roland Windel Hoffman on September 16, 1945 in the Elizabeth Lutheran Church in Caldwell with reverend Bill Mueller her brother-in-law officiating. Martha and Roland made their home on Hoffman Lane where they raised their four children. They ran a dairy farm for many years along with farming before his death in August of 1978. Martha continued the dairy business with help of her children for a few more years.
She was a member of Elizabeth Lutheran Church where she was quite active in teaching Sunday school, helping with Bible school, the Lady’s Aid society and the Church’s prayer line. Her greatest love was her Church, her family and all her grandchildren. She was known to children and adults as Mawmaw because of her Compassion and outreach to others.
She is preceded in death by her parents, frank and Johanna Vavra, her loving husband of 33 years, Roland Hoffman, one son Dennis Wayne Hoffman, and her only brother Lawrence Vavra.
Survivors include two sons and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Jan Hoffman and John Hoffman, one daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Robert Jones all of Caldwell. Three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Viola Skrabanek and Virginia and Buddy Barnett all of Caldwell and Dorothy and Marvin Ondrasek of Burlington and one sister-in-law, Pat Vavra of Caldwell; grandchildren Kimberly and Josh Varner, Jamie and Keith Scarmardo, Kristen Flitcroft, Sherry Scott, Jennifer and Dan Kovasovic, Amy, Melanie and Kelsey Hoffman and eleven great- grandchildren, Austin, and Averie Scarmardo, Jacob, Matthew, Katie and Karah Varner, Gabby, Emma and Aubrey Kovasovic, Kevin Scott and Parker Hoffman.
The family suggests memorials may be made to Elizabeth Lutheran Church of Caldwell.
