obit: Vojt J. "VJ" Holub
Vojt J. Holub, age 88, passed away on Saturday, March 23, 2013.
"VJ", as he was affectionately known, graduated from Fowlerton Consolidated High School in 1941, where he played football and was the Captain of that year's championship team. He proudly served his country in the US Army during WWII and the Korean conflict. In Austria, between May 7th and 8th of 1945, his division was instrumental in the apprehension of Hermann Goering, Hitler's number one Nazi. VJ was a member of the Tank Destroyer Force Company "A", 636th Tank Destroyer Battalion, when he was discharged in May 1946. Subsequently returning to San Antonio and he later joined the San Antonio Police Department, where he retired after 31 years of loyal and dedicated service. VJ was a member of the San Antonio Fire and Police Pension Fund; President of Alamo Lodge 141, RVOS Farm Mutual Insurance Company; immediate past member of Finance Committee, Anton Wenzel Lodge 174, Sons of Hermann and SPJST Fraternal.
VJ is preceded in death by his parents, John and Anna Kana Holub; and sisters: Betty Webb, Bernice Hubbert, Lillian Aniol and Jo Ann Johns.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary V. Holub; children: Martin Holub and wife, Patti; Beverly Shaner and Paul Holub; grandchildren: Alyssa Shaner, Aaryanna Shaner and Cole Holub; sisters: Mildred Tope and Annie Mae Lawson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will start Tuesday at 5:00 pm at Porter Loring on McCullough.
